I think this has potential to be a good thread. I'm talking about those rare gems, the sort of band you fall in love with but nobody else has heard of. A band with little exposure yet you see a lot of merit in and would like others to appreciate and grow to love as much as you do.

One of my favourite bands at the moment are a alt country act from Portland Oregon in the US of A called Richmond Fontaine. The singer Willy Vlautin is a fantastic lyricist and tells little heartbreaking stories. The musicianship is solid and catchy and it has a distinctive sound. A sound that at first sounds very alien but once you allow yourself to be at ease with it (and the voice) you grow to find endearing.

It's all very well me saying the guy is a great songwriter and lyricist but he has also had two books published (one of which was an editor's choice in the New York Times Book Review and named one of the top 25 books of the year by the Washington Post) so clearly the guy knows how to use a pen and paper. His songs all seem so truthful, so honest and really leave a mark on you.

I have all the albums and would recommend them to anyone with an interest in alt country music or just anyone with an appreciation of songwriting/lyrics because i really think this band are special but no-one else knows it.
 
Incredible String Band. One of my favourite bands of all time. Nobody has ever heard of them. Their heyday was in the late 60's early 70's.
 
This is probably better than starting a thread about someone you love and having it fall to the wayside like I did a week or so ago, good idea Frankly.

I'd like to recommend a man from my local area called Colm Lynch. He is an incredible singer/songwriter with a voice akin to Dylan according to some and Springsteen to others. He has had a small bit of exposure when he won an award at the BalconyTV awards a year or two back but has yet to make a name for himself outside of Ireland.



 
Derek Trucks - incredibly talented slide blues guitarist. Has a band called The Derek Trucks band. He is became a member of the Allman Brothers Band at age 20 and toured with Clapton a couple of years back. The Wall Street Journal described him as "the most awe-inspiring electric slide guitar player performing today"
 
Miike Snow. Good liitle band from Sweden. I made a thread about them a few months back but it only got one or two replies. Since then they've been getting a bit of air time on the radio so hopefully people will hear of them soon
 
Holly Throsby- Australian folk singer.
Great lyrics, beautiful voice. makes sincere and consistent albums.

My parents love them, and I've heard quite a lot of their stuff.

I like Rusko, but Mockney's heard of him.
 
Fat Freddy's Drop.....Lots of people have heard of them, but they're not as popular as they should be
 
Heard of Miike Snow and I rate them.

I've three suggestions, psychedelic American bands from the late 60's or early 70's I think

Velvert Turner Group

Velvert Turner was a friend of Jimi Hendrix and his style is really similar. If you want more songs like Hendrix I recommend you check his album(s) if you can find them.
 
Hmm actually, what kinda audience has Flying Lotus got? I'd recommend him...

and here is one of my all time favorite albums that didnt get the exposure it deserved - seemed to be a bit ahead of it's time ...

The only people I know who know Fingathing are people I have turned on to them myself.

They're fecking brilliant, first heard of them when they were supporting DJ Shadow in Manc, been a fan ever since.

from the album "thirteen Cities" which was the most recent album until the latest one and here is another live video, although a handheld camera this time so the quality at any louder bits breaks up but still you'll get an idea.

They were on Grand Central Records - coming from Manchester and being a fan of hiphop/electronica means that I know most stuff from that label - have seen then live as well.
 
I can relate to the whole "bands you love that nobody has heard of" thing, but then I tend to find my music through somewhat random means.

Some of my favourites;

Astronautalis (skinny white kid rapper from Texas who sounds like Modest Mouse doing hip-hop).


Seafood (incredible British alternative rock band who were very influenced by Sonic Youth).


...Music Video? (one man with some gadgets from Pheonix AZ)


P.O.S. (really good rapper with a hardcore/punk background and side project)


Random (great chiptune artist)


The Good Life (Saddle Creek band, side project of Tim Kasher but far better imo than his main band, Cursive)


Right Away Great Captain (Wonderful side project by the frontman from Atlanta's Manchester Orchestra, so far released 2 albums in a concept series about an 17th century mariner)


The Microphones (fuzzy awesome)


Nero's Day At Disneyland (an epic muddle of happy hardcore, gabba, breakbeats, glitchcore andc chiptunes... it's just a hot mess)

I like Smog, plus he's had Astronautalis support him a few times.
 
Darkstar - one of the most interesting groups to come out of dubstep, totally unique sound and getting better with every release and are one of the few dubstep artists who are musical and use vocals (not reggae samples etc) to great effect.

This is ridiculously good:












Destroyer - a side project of Dan Bejar (New Pornographers/Swan Lake), very verbose clever music. His voice is one of those that you'll either hate immediately or find oddly compelling, but a great songwriter:

 
Avett Brothers. Maybe not everybody's cup of tea, but I saw them live and they were great. The album is a bit softer than when they perform live.



And I just recently discovered this artist, Langhorne Slim.

I've got a friend who's a huge fan of the Avett Brothers, I've had one of their albums on my iPod for ages - must get round to listening to it properly

i had heard of them but only two songs. Die Die Die which i think is brilliant and the other one, I Would Be Sad which i could frankly take or leave.

Here's a couple of songs by Willy Vlautin a bit drunk in a hotel room. I for some reason imagine Kinky and eyepopper liking this...

spent many a night in 93-94 tripping to this.

Im no hip-hop fan really, but of the stuff I do like New Kingdom's stuff is as good as it all gets.
