Currently have a 30gb Ipod Video which I've had for a couple of years, thought I'd invest in a replacement as I'm going travelling for a few months.

Plan to put on quite a few movies, tunes, vids and few TV series on so I'm looking for something with 100 gb + of memory. Seems like an Archos 5 is the way to go, and a 250 gb one is going for around £220 on ebay.

Do any of you guys have an Archos? If so, would you recommend? Any other vid players I should be looking into?

I've an Archos 605. It's shit. You have to pay extra for all the add ons like AC3 playback, internet browser etc. The only good thing is the video quality.

ACtually at the bottom of that page is a review for the Archos 5.

Cheers mate, couple good links from that page. Think I'm going to go for the Archos 5. Can't think of anything else that will compare with it in terms of memory and price.

I never understand the point of these Archos portable video things. Why not just get a 12"-15" laptop?

I agree. I paid 400e for that Archos so I could watch TV and stuff on the train up/down from college every week, because I had a big 17" heavy laptop. Other than that I never really used it, it's too big to be a regular MP3 player, the web browser is poor, the touch interface is miles behind the iPhone.

I ended up getting a 13" laptop, although to be honest I rarely even use that on the train because my iPhone keeps me so entertained.

I'm going back-packing in India and China so the Archos' size advantage is a factor. Also, with the Archos setting me back around £220, I can't think of a similar priced laptop worth getting.
