I need some sort of bluffers guide or really simplistic overview ... or an intro of some sort. Anytime my interest is piqued I dip a toe in and feel like I'm drowning.

Some of the best 'gigs' I was at was a series of Beethovens Symponies in the NCH here in Dublin, but apart from himself I know f*ck all ...

Any tips on works or conductors or the like?

Depends what you like really. I don't really listen to classical music that often, but every few months I have a few weeks where I dig it up again and listen to it for a while. And this is one of those periods again :)

I like big orchestral classical music, choral stuff and some opera now and then.

I have made a playlist of some of my all-time favorites on Youtube.

Mozart's Requiem will probably always be my favorite piece, but Beethoven, Tjaichovski, Händel, etc are great as well.

I know very little on the theory or the music itself (never studied or played music myself) and also about conductors/orchestras, etc I know very little I'm afraid. I just know the all-time greats like Bernstein, Karajan, Rattle and the likes

any sort of base at all is what I need, like recommendations, I'll check out the youtube clips

nice one!

Here you have some more great classical music which is not in that list.

Sure you'll recognise this one from somewhere:
