Anthony Martial | Sevilla loan watch

Having a large squad isn't where Ole messed up. Where he messed up was not knowing how to have a large squad. He was so dependent on the same 11 players last season. Mediocre manager with no idea how to set up different. He kept a large squad despite knowing he was shite at rotating. He would have City's squad rioting. Insurance cover doesn't mean he won't see the pitch, if we're so stacked that he can't get games we'd be enjoying the best case scenario where everyone is concurrently in good form and all our signings panned out, which honestly is very unlikely.

It's also important to have the right player for the right squad role. A squad player should be on relatively modest wages and content with their role in the squad so that they don't sulk and are always ready to give everything when they are needed. Martial is on huge money, a lot more than a backup player should be earning, and secondly he is not someone who you can trust to try his best when he's needed because he'll be sulking about not being a first 11 player and being forced to stay. It just doesn't make sense to force him to stay in the kind of role you are talking about.

Alright then, let's let time show us. The future isn't far off anyway. I think we can squeeze some value from this asset even if we eventually bin but we'll see how things pan out. I've honestly posted more than I'd like but only because these Martial threads always draw out a crowd passionate on singular outcomes. Even more tiring than the Ronaldo threads. The most covered player for some reason.

Seriously. Someone else had to point it out. Not even worth dragging out. Not even saying he shouldn't be sold but that it doesn't have to be this very summer because of high squad turnover but for some reason it's treated like a matter of urgency. Very very easy to comprehend, it's not easy replacing so many at once. One simply has to put their mind to names of actual squad option/bench strikers that will be available in the summer to realise we need to get the timing right. It's basic foresight that the replacement of backup and first option are best staggered.

Justblike it was basic foresight to keep Lingard, lose out on a transfer fee and waste millions in wages. It’s actually very simple to comprehend that when Martial, Mata and Lingard have started some number of league games combined as Dan Jamesdid for us this season that we don’t need to retain them.

Cavani and Greenwood need to be replaced but we need to move on from this flawed logic of retaining backups through fear and incompetence.

If you think his last cameo appearance was "crap" then you might be the one who needs to give up the controller because it was as reasonable a performance as you could expect from a sub. You want a balon d'or cameo? It also isn't a videogame where transfers are a dime a dozen every summer. Let's buy a new bench player right? Replace everyone and fix everything in one summer. With all the turnover in that area of the pitch can you show a realistic rotation of attackers for next season that doesn't require 100-150m.
Right because 1 decent cameo overwrites all the useless time he came off the bench.

You're delusional if you think having one of the highest paid player in the league come off the bench is a good idea.

You've seen our wage situation and you're calling me delusional. Every attacking candidate to come off our bench is making well above 200k. Everyone else has made a viable case why he shouldn't but you're the one guy repeatedly making shite points. Take a step back and let the more capable guide you.

Yeah, a more capable guy who thinks one of the highest paid player who has been shit for about 18 months now deserves to stay at the club instead of us selling while we still have a chance of shedding his wages off.

It's telling that Rangnick prefers Elanga over him, but I'm sure you prefer Ole's approach of keeping expensive players on the bench while we let them run out their contract and not give our youth players a chance.

I wasn't talking about myself but rather those who have given decent reasons to move on in the summer. This kind of poor reading comprehension is yet another reason you might be better for the listening role than talking role.

Looks like he had lost his mojo. Even the quickness in the dribbling is gone. Hopefully, he will improve as he gets minutes under his belt, and have Lingard's style of revival. At least, the WHU type of form.

Assist and played a part in another.

Fitness and confidence is low though.

I assumed the 2nd placed team in Spain would dominate possession all game but Seville had 49% possession at half. Improved in the 2nd but I was surprised.

Please change thread to "Marthial".

One of the worst defending from a cross that I've ever seen but great for his confidence

I like him as a player and I think he has some great tools (a very good pass-and-move game, dribbling, finishing with his instep, upper-body strength), and some clear weaknesses that many have touched on (in-game intensity and penalty box movement being the most often cited, but I also think he lacks variety in how he strikes the ball, which makes him easier to defend against). I generally don't like the criticisms of laziness / sulkiness / lack of mentality (IMO these tend to be a little over the top and lack some nuance), but I do understand the criticisms coming in certain phases of play.

However, my biggest worry for Martial is that he seems to have lost a lot of the speed that made him so effective initially. Not sure why this is the case either - he looks to be in good shape and I used to see him posting videos of himself training during the off-season. If he doesn't regain some of those physical traits -- and make significant improvement on at least a few of those weaknesses -- he'll likely fall way short of the player he promised to be, which will be a damned shame for the club.

Our Martial chant is miles better than that tbf.

for whatever reason, before clicking play, i just assumed they would have kept the same chant/melody but with spanish lyrics. then I heard what their chant and was super disappointed

Watched most of the game last night.

Lets put it this way...I dont miss him.

I hope he does well but Sevilla must have some low standards if they thought that was worthy of a standing ovation. He got a nice assist but not a lot else, and he did waste a 1v1.

Because they have a competent manager who's been building something good for a while now.

Edit: Lopetegui is also on our shortlist for the permanent managers job.

Plays really dull football though. They're more painful to watch than Simeone's Atletico

He’s played what? Two games? The coach has already warned him about his performances, and to the media directly:

"On Martial, I think that he can adapt to different roles," he said in his pre-Elche press conference via Sevillafc.en.

"He can play through the middle, on the left-wing or behind the striker.

"Getting him in the right position is important but what I think is more important is his performance and this is something he can give in every position."

Glad to see he improved after his first performance, hopefully he’ll finish season well for Sevilla so we can sell him in the summer. He’s definitely lost some pace/acceleration since he joined us so move to Spain or Italy would be best for him.
