11-53/8-11 | De Gea and Henderson penalty saving record going into shootout

It's not common. But it's also not common to have the sub keeper be massively better at saving penalties, and up until last season there were only three subs as opposed to the six that we had available this time. The fact that it hasn't happened very often in the past is irrelevant as it was far more difficult when using only three subs.
I'd need to see evidence that it is so rare that the sub keeper is better at penos. This is just a talking point for me and a lot is being made of it when in reality it never happens. People act like there is no downside to bringing in a cold keeper too

Bruno cost us the final with that decision. Bruno is a pe teacher and has to go
Not sure why he did this and also did that mean the Villarreal captain got to chose the end the penalties where taken or was that a separate coin toss?

The notes are likely fake and even if they were real 4 out of the first five were wrong
Excactly. Brilliant way to get a viral twitter post but thats it. So many reasons why a fake from photo but also, there are no relevant stats on most of those players. Perhaps a couple of them are regular penalty takers.

Maybe subbing de Gea would have made a difference but nearly all their spot kicks were brilliant (as were ours).

My only view after watching again is that takers seem to have a read on de Gea and know which side he is going.

Even if the notes were real I noticed their keeper would stand in the same spot as De Gea stood when he wasn't facing a penalty.

Wouldn't be have noticed a big folder of notes in De Gea's towel with notes on where his team mates where going to take penalties?

Fair point.

And one of the reasons why it's hardly ever done (even if a) you have a sub to spare and b) your man on the bench is significantly better on pens).

But as others have said, the circumstances here are extraordinary. De Gea is known not only for having a very poor record over the last five or so seasons - but also for being particularly unimpressive as a shoot-out keeper. And we did have a sub to spare.

The plausibility of the thing also goes up a fair degree when we factor in that Ole himself apparently admitted to having considered doing it.

The club didn’t bother to check the stats that the first team who shoots the pen, wins in 60.4% of the cases. Expecting them to check stats in goalkeepers is way above their intellect.

The last three years have really been brutal to DDGs legacy. From savior and best in the world to utter liability.

You know it's bad when the best defence someone can come up with is 'His stats are average'.

I blame the manager (though still firmly Ole in) and the club not just for him not being subbed but giving him a world record new contract, for sticking with him when he was costing us points left and right, and for being half-hearted about it when he was finally dropped.

When Romero was playing in the cups DDG was selected over him in the semi-final (despite Romero being in better form in my opinion). We lost that too.

Henderson may or may not be the level we need, but he's currently much better than DDG. Anyone who doesn't see that is letting their memories of peak De Gea cloud his judgment.

This situation needs to be sorted out asap. Can't see a successful future for the club where DdG is our main goal keeper.

It really has been.

I don't know whether he has lost his reflexes or whether he benefited from being in a poor United side in his prime years. There are goalkeepers like that. Those who benefit from being in a team that concedes a lot of chances but struggle to turn it on when they're needed only like once every game.

Henderson proved tonight that it would've made no difference the other way around.

After all the bitching, the one penalty he got near he dove over. Useless.

Never want to see him play for us again. The only thing I thought he was good at was penalties and tonight showed he is absolutely pathetic at them

He just fell over to his right everytime well before the kicker even got to the ball.

That would depend on Henderson ignoring the paper that said to stand still. Had DDG done what he was told we would have won

Henderson looked tiny. As with the Europa League final it was an impressive shoot out from our players but the opposition never seem to miss.

Henderson showed us he is incapable of at standing still. He made it so easy for their kicks

The state of you. What a disgrace! Log off!

I honestly felt just the same watching that shootout as I do with Dave. Zero expectation that there'll be one save. The only hope is that they hit it off target.

The one penalty he gets near he dives over it ffs.Woeful in the shootout is being generous.

He was pathetic. He stood gurning like an idiot after all his boasting only to just flop over on his side every single time Middlesbrough couldn't have missed when he just gave them a clear target.

De Gea would have done better in this shootout after saving a couple this season. Most of Middlesbrough's penalties were good but most of them were also to Henderson's left and he was just not diving the right direction. The one he did dive that way for, he ended up diving just over it.

I don't give a feck. Read what you said. You sound like a petulant child!

No I sound like someone that just watched the worst effort from a goalkeeper in a penalty shootout I have ever seen.

A goalkeeper that we keep getting told is brilliant at saving penalties. What a joke that was

De Gea in general has been terrible but recently he has saved a few and I actually think he’d have saved at least one if he’d played tonight.

To say you never want to see him play for United again because of a penalty shoot-out. Honestly, go to bed. You're tired!

If only we'd had Hendo in goal in the Europa final!

That Ole and his dreadful calls!

Considering I wasn't keen on seeing him play for us before the game them watching that shameful non effort from him. Yeah a Ghost would have better in goals there.

Just sums us up these days players that are only good at bigging themselves up before the game them flopping on the pitch

Very good penalties from both sets of players, as in the Europa final. It feels easy to say Henderson should’ve done better but (other than not diving over one) I’m not sure what more he should’ve done. Penalties are a gamble aren’t they

Guess you missed this one from Edouard Mendy? Who Chelsea are surely very glad they didn't move on from - because saving penalties is realistically a very small part of what makes a goalkeeper valuable.

Yeah, you're definitely a child.

Should have saved the one he dived over. The rest weren't saveable. Boro took some very, very good pens.
