Looking forward to this now which tells you how important is what for the mood of the club, players and fans of the significance of last night.

Hopefully Casemiro plays and If Antony deal gets done we could see him too

Looking at other side's fixtures at the weekend, everyone you'd expect to be "right up there" have very very winnable games: Chelsea at home to Leicester, Liverpool at home to Bournemouth, City at home to Palace and Arsenal play Fulham at the Emirates. Spurs are at Forest. We really need the three points to stop too large a gap opening up given our poor start

    Team pretty much picks itself

    De Gea
    Dalot - Varane - Martinez - Malacia
    Eriksen - Casemiro
    Bruno
    Sancho - Martial - Rashford

    —————-——DdG——————-
    -Dalot—-Varane—Martinez-Malacia

    ———————-Casemiro——————

    —————Eriksen——-Fred—————-

    —-Sancho———Martial———Rashford

This is a test of our consistency, character and whether the players have learned anything over the last year of why they failed so miserably. This is a game we should be winning easily.

This is an interesting one. Does ETH stay with the counter or goes back to building his team?

I think if it's the latter, he is going to pick CR7 and Maguire again and a lot of folks are going to get mad here. If he wants to be on the counter, they're obviously gone.

Yeah this is the test now. Its great beating Liverpool, but we have seen it too much over the last few years. Fantastic result followed by dire result.

Need the win here, more just to show a consistency, that and our away form has been terrible

Can't see Erikson playing again in a week with a short turnaround to this game so think Fred and Casemiro will come in midfield. This will be a test for Martinez against Che Adams who was a handful for Leicester.

Southampton will come absolutely racing out the traps trying to run and press us. We'll see if this team can quell that and earn the right to play. I hope ETH does his research as Southampton really won't give us a moment's peace if we're not up for this.

It'll be really impressive if we suppress them and take over this game. A real statement of intent.

We have to win an away game again, what is it now, 7 or 8 games on the bounce we haven't won away from home?

I'd be tempted to keep the same team that started last night. Martial maybe from the start in place of Elanga, who actually had a decent first half and caused problems. We'll have to see on Casemiro - he needs to train with the team and for the coaches to see how fit he really is. I would not be shocked if he doesn't start this game and get on around the 60-70th minute mark.

We need to remain solid, build some momentum and get properly back on track. I'm sure ETH will be watching a lot of Saints in the build up., I think we'll see DDG go long again to counter their high press, at least in the early stages of the game. We need to defend set pieces well if they have JWP playing.

Southampton are always tough at their place. Any win would be a good win there. Hoping for a 0-2.

Strange to say it but this will be the real test in many ways...have we turned a corner/has the penny started to drop or did the players just manage to get themselves up for a big game at OT playing in that classic 'counter-punch' style we know we're good at?

This is the perfect game to use as a test. It's Saturday lunchtime. Southampton aren't a local rival or a competitor/there is no bad blood. It's off the back of a high-intensity game the players put a lot of energy into and were widely praised for. Southampton will let us have the ball.

How will we react on Saturday? Will it be back to the half-arsed, slack and nervous performances we have seen on a regular basis or will they tear about the Southampton team in the same way they got into Salah, Milner, Henderson and Diaz.

I really hope it's the latter...but I'm going to reserve judgement!

Going to be a difficult game. That is for sure. We always seem to struggle against them.
But no reason why we can not get 3 points.

Hoping to see Rashford benched for this. He’s only good for hitting on the break, against a team set up to let us have most the ball he’s pretty useless.

I hope the players will be equally motivated to win every next match. Otherwise against Liverpool after first 30 minutes players were back to good old self. Midfielders and front three shut down, and monstrous performance from defenders kept us in.

We need the same hunger all the time.

I think we will win this match 1-0.

Hoping we have turned a corner and that we will bring the same kind of intensity to this game. I'm actually looking forward to this game.

I would go with something like this.

    DDG
    Dalot - Varane - Martinez - Malacia
    Casemiro - Eriksen
    Sancho - Bruno - Rashford
    Martial
Alternatively, Ronaldo on top and Martial on the left.

    Would like to see:

    DDG

    Malacia
    Martinez
    Varane
    Dalot

    Casemiro
    McTominay

    Rashford
    Bruno
    Sancho

    Martial

I thought Eriksen did fine yesterday and brought calmness to our game, as well as being instrumental in the buildup for the first goal.
But would like to see more energy for this away trip, they’re a good side, and McTominay with Casemiro as a duo will give a lot of freedom for the front 4 to express themselves.

Lots of people on the same page regarding line up. Can't wait for this but feel it'll be a tough game as it usually is there.

    DDG
    Dalot Varane Martinez Malacia
    Casemiro Fred
    Bruno
    Sancho Martial Rashford

Subs - Eriksen, Ronaldo, Mctominay, Elanga.

    United 3-1

almost more interested in how this game goes than liverpool game. Going into Pool game it was about getting a result, not necessarily how we played throughout. This is a game we should not only be winning, but seeing more of the identity and imposing ourselves on the other team. Not shitting ourselves worrying about "height"

Yes but also too early in ETH reign to talk about identity, especially when we still have pretty much the same squad from last season. Just hoping the guys would maintain similar level of commitment and intensity, then I’ll be happy. Results will come later.

not necessarily a full 90 of perfect identity, but want to see built upon more than i saw yesterday. First stage of game united were really good, then turned way too passive overall for my liking for most of the other part of match. Loved seeing maguire and shaw benched. Want that kind of identity building to continue. Especially with casemiro prob playing a role

It won't happen but I would like to see rashford and martial given a go as a striker partnership and given that it's these type of games where the opposition will sit a lot deeper we could do with going a bit more adventurous.

Hopefully we have Antony available for this one, but he is unlikely to start given that he wasn't involved in the game prep. Also early on after signing Case my assumption was Fred would pair with him based on their history, but Fred is simply too limited in his passing and if you play him Ericksen or Bruno come off. So it looks like Fred's role is defensive sub to spell Ericksen/Bruno late when we hopefully have the lead.

Putting Garancho in my lineup for a couple reasons. First because I want to see more of him. Second because if they add Antony, let alone Antony and Gakpo, it will squeeze the bottom of the roster and you have to determine how you stack Elanga and Garnacho projecting across the games ahead. Yes Elanga may be ahead and the decision is as good as done. But I am not so certain of that. Elanga isn't special in closing but Garancho may be and if you're not going to play him it is good to know that now so it's a good window to look at him.

    Martial
    Rashford Fernandes Garnacho
    Ericksen Casemiro
    Malacia Martinez Varane Dalot

Praying it’s not a ‘after the Lord Mayor’s show’ kind of performance.

We’ll get much more of an idea whether anything has changed with the culture after this trip.

Hopefully a convincing win but worst case if we concede first I just want to see some fight and no head dropping.

    DDG

    Sancho Bruno Rashford
