van Gaal should simply have started 4-3-3.

    Herrera should have started.
This was the game to play it. It's alright having a sytem but if other teams suss it out and put a shift it then you might get nothing. You have to be able to change depending on the games.

What happened to beating the teams we should beat? The way our players seem to have to pass in certain patterns pisses me off. Lose any pressure that you may be building against the opposition.

We need someone who can finish this. Really Rooney just cant. These games ( at home ) when end this way is fecking sad.

Lost the ball practically every time he went near it. Atleast he was trying to make things happen but it wasn't his day atall.

Agree, Memphis seemed to be a bit overeager after his midweek exploits and all he showed is he still has some way to go. No bother, happened often enough with Cristiano when he first arrived.

Darmian is a cracking rightback but really really needs to work on his crossing. That's the main reason I liked the Pedro idea, Darmian overlappping Mata is all well and good but his delivery isn't up to scratch.

Will agree with that although it is a lot better than the shite Valencia serves up.

@Damien, how are points given for line up prediction? Where do I find the rules?

    respect van Gaal..but his stubborness....ahhhh

we would be scoring freely if we simply reverted to 4-3-3.

Bastian is too slow in this formation. Carrick improved things immediately he came on.

Rooney was fine. Memphis really should have been pulled after 60 minutes.

If Young and Herrera had played instead of Januzaj and Memphis we would have won the match.

This. We really lacked someone who can offer up something different on the right flank.

In what way? 2 goals in 3 PL games, 2 of which were at home. Poor, poor stuff.

This time last season we were conceding five to Leicester. It's obvious we need to improve our cutting edge upfront, but the foundations are there, and before they weren't. It's unlucky Fellaini was suspended, he would have had a field day out there today.

Not a disaster. One of those games where you hope it spurs the club on to doing what's necessary. Signing a forward and working on final balls and finishing for example.

Very ordinary except first 20 where our finishing sucked ass. The rest was bad, forward play average at best, passes in final third were very dodgy and Newcastle are pure shite so overall a terrible result for me when the likes of Swansea and Liverpool on horizon. That's only 5 goals in our last 9 prem games and Rooney now gone 10 without a goal.

Don't know why everyone has their knickers in a twist? We played well today, especially in the first half. And our subs improved us for once (bar Valencia). It was very unlucky of us to not get a goal too, and Rooney was better than his last few games. People must have patience, you could clearly see that in the second half Newcastle parked the bus, yet we were still managing some good moments. I'm sure we will get our game flowing soon. It has only been three EPL games, in which we have been doing better than our rivals (aside from City).

Memphis was a bit shit today, and Valencia just slowed us down so much. God knows why he took Darmian off.

A quarter of a million spent and 12 months to work on the "project". We should have more than mere foundations.

We have to sign a striker until the end of the window, otherwise we are properly fecked. If Fellaini would have played today rest assured we would have gotten the three points. But we can't count of Fellaini to be our number one striker for the whole season.

We really look like we are just a top level goalscoring striker away from being a force. Could have easily won today with a bit of luck, it was just one of those games where the ball was intent on avoiding the net like the plague.

We are a much better team. Maybe if you were expecting him to break up Moyes's shite in a year and win the League title then you should be disappointed. He has not done the perfect job and the jury is obviously still out but United are much improved.

We were gaping open this time last year, had so much more mediocre shite hanging around and our overall play has improved.

The mere fact that we have to rely on him should tell us there's something very far wrong.

this isn't unlucky - it's lack of skills. For all our possession and half-chances we created 2-3 big chances - and Newcastle's 2 best chances were equally big as ours
More looking toward Rooney's offside goal - could have easily been given. Along with a few blocks and deflected shots that on another day go our way. In the grand scheme of things I can't say Newcastle didn't deserve the point, but we did play OK and got the ball out wide often (should have done better with crosses).

I wasn't expecting us to win the league, but I was expecting more than a marginal improvement. I repeat, a quarter of a million spent.

That's exactly the point. We have to bring in a world class striker. I hope that every decision maker who has a say in that saw that clearly today.

Not mere, strong, and we were a mess. Di María/Falcao were largely smokescreens to make a point at a time when sponsors and transfer targets may have regarded us as the new Liverpool (7th, no Europe, etc.). This has been the first proper transfer window LvG has had having assessed the squad in its entirety. Seems to me all the business he has done is excellent.

And a quarter of a million is what Rooney makes in a week, in case you haven't noticed.

I repeat, PEANUTS! This is too funny, shouting "a quarter of a million" from the rooftops.

Completely agree, we played well and got a bit unlucky. Wasted some chances and had a goal ruled offside incorrectly, could have been a completely different game if that wasn't ruled offside. Memphis was really poor today, trying too hard to make something happen. He will get better though, the talent is definitely there. Thought Mata looked great today, so many little 1-2's and played some really dangerous balls in, granted he had a few picked off but that is bound to happen when you're consistently looking for that final incisive pass. Even though he started wide Mata was our de facto #10 today. Midfield and defense both looked great today.

You can't throw numbers like that, look at who left and why, we basically had to rebuild a team because of the age.

No, it just tells you that in a physical league like the EPL, when teams park the bus, a presence like Fellaini's is important.

What was the closest we got to scoring? Smalling header hitting the post. Join the dots.

Strange how Man City, Arsenal and Chelsea manage to get along quite well without a Fellaini of their own.

Charlie Austin is the only available striker that can batter those typical "park the bus" defence. Sign Mane and Austin for plan A and plan B.
