We're not going to change formation now just to fit Herrera in to the team guys, come on actually think about it. Home to Newcastle we're not going to make a defensive switch to the formation are we (by dropping the second striker)? It's nonsensical. If Herrera was going to start this game it would be in place of Schneiderlin or Carrick. But he won't. So there.

Agreed with the first part, though as I wrote above, resting Schneiderlin here makes some sense. As does starting Herrera-Schneiderlin and one of Schweinsteiger or Carrick against Brugge on Wednesday, since they'll be pressing and Herrera will help us get away from that and will put in a shift.

In the last game that Herrera played, he was dispossessed an alarming number of times.
I just dont see him starting a game for us any time soon.
LVG's first rule is possession and if a midfielder can't hold possession, he is absolutely no good for his tactic.

Thoughts are with Young atm. First team place gone just like that.

I just want to switch Mata in field and Januzaj to the right. Just think it'll bring much more out of all the attackers. Ideally though Mata would played as an a/m and not to high up the pitch but that's not what LVG seems to want.

Think it's time for Scweinsteiger to get a start otherwise keep everyone the same though would be nice to see Herrera.

he looked like he was trying too hard....

as probably our best outfield player last year, along with Carrick, he deserves a chance

Van Gaal might value possession over creativity, unpredictability but Herrera deserves to be in the side ahead of Carrick who has been very poor the last 2 games

he is the only midfielder we have that scores, and has been doing better in that respect than our actual strikers. How is it a defensive switch to add goals to a team from midfield?

I actually think we will tear them a new one, 3-1 to us. Blind with an own goal. Rooney, Depay and Bastian Fecking Schweinsteiger to score for us.

Taking out Januzaj for Herrera, which the majority of people have suggested, would be a defensive switch - a second striker for a midfielder. Januzaj is a goal threat as he showed against Villa. LVG himself says:

"I like a second striker in that position (behind Rooney) more than a third midfielder. That is why, for example, Herrera is not playing but is always coming on as a substitute, because he is more of a controlling midfielder there." - http://www.manchestereveningnews.co...ws/manchester-united-manager-van-gaal-9866168

And that's how he has been used so far this season, replacing the second striker when we want to see out a lead. Now, if LVG was to put Herrera in in place of Carrick or Schneiderlin of course that would be an attacking change - and something that I'd like to see in home games against teams in the bottom half of the table - but that's not what people in this thread have been suggesting or what I was responding to.

Very much looking forward to the league programme resuming. I didn't think the game against Brugge offered much in the way of a test, so I'm hoping to see our side tested more against Newcastle so we can really evaluate our side (although not too much).:D

I still have a few concerns about Romero. We have seen glimpses of him in action but thanks to the stability in defence and lack of testing opposition, he's remained relatively quiet thus far. I'd like to see better communication between Romero and his back line. I highlighted this as a concern prior to his debut and there were 1 or 2 pulse racing moments against Spurs. One back pass very nearly ended up in the back of the net despite Romero saving the situation by the skin of his teeth.

Rojo must be coming back to full fitness which raises the question of the Centre back position. Will LvG keep Blind? I was a sceptic at first, but I'm growing to admire his performances so far. However Rojo can offer that much needed chemistry that I think Romero could do with - so it's an interesting one.

I'd like to see Schweinsteiger start this game and have Carrick on stand-by. Schweinsteiger offers us security and control in the middle of the park. I'd also like to see Herrera's influence at some stage. Judging by his social media accounts he seems very supportive of his colleague's work, although I'm sure he's desperate to get some playing time. Would like to see him slot in front of Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin with Memphis and Young on the wings. Ashley Young is another player in form who I'd like to see start.

Here's hoping for a comfortable ride! 2-0 United.

No need to change much.Maybe Bastian for Carrick.

    3-1 for us again (Memphis,Januzaj and...Rooney)

I wouldn't drop Rooney for this game. He's scored so many goals in the past against Newcastle, so hopefully he could get on the scoresheet.

The only changes I can see maybe happening from the starting line-up against Brugge is Schweini getting his first start and Chicharito up top with Rooney in the #10 role.

yeah and with Romero flapping, right? Typical caf

    Herrera @ #10 for me
Don't think that will happen. LvG will probably go with Adnan for now. Herrera is in a spot of bother tbh. He's not a number 6 as other midfielders are and he's not a number 10 like Adnan and Mata are. He needs to adapt.

I don't understand? Are you continuing to have a laugh, or are you taking what I said serious?
:D If I remember correctly, you have backed Blind and Romero to do well previously. Decided to respond to the post before some one else comes up and say they agree with you and are worried about Blind scoring own goals.

For Herrera's and the team's sake I have all my fingers cross that he starts. It's a very logical step if he's in for either Carrick (ok to meh form) or Schneiderlin (to rest him).

For Herrera it's obvious because he's too good to be a sub.

For the team, aside from trying to incorporate Herrera's ability (which is arguably for the good of the long term) I don't want to see LVG doing a Mourinho, where he runs the same group of players to the ground. Most at risk for me atm are Shaw, Darmian and Schneiderlin. I think those 3 probably cover the most ground and the most important statistic (that I'm using my own watching skillz to judge by) is that they perform the most high intensity short-to-long runs. I've mentioned it in other posts but I don't care how fit you are (ok maybe unless you're Valencia), if those 3 continue like that, they will not last.

You know why players like Alves, Alba, Lahm and Alaba have that energy to do the same high intensity runs/pressing they do from the start of the season to the end (apart from maybe having a Winter break)? They play in teams where they are absolutely dominant in possession and only have to use their atheletic ability a few times a game that is not of their own will i.e mostly in defensive instances (where you really stretch your body). Right now, we're not that well drilled yet and they're playing good because of their athleticism in the system as opposed to them being able to shine because of their athleticism in the system.

Anyways basically I want to see LVG rotate the team now. I'd gamble rotating a team now is better for the duration of the season than waiting for injuries/fatigue/loss of form to hit. The one thing I've been very pleased with LVG are his substitutions in that he's managing game time well so I want him to build on that.

I think its a little too early to rotate for the sake of end of season chaos. It is much better if we can get some consistent attacking cohesion and defensive stability over the run of games before tweaking a player or two won't hamper the team. Right now, It is necessary to identify the strongest XI with all the fitness, sharpness and formation sorted.

Will be interesting to see how BFS copes with the Christmas schedule when he is used to having around a month of. I would rather he rotates now to get everyone up to pace, we have games against the big teams coming up in the next couple of months and of course there is the CL as well.

Looking forward to going to this game.

Think there are a lot of positives around United at the moment, despite the widespread negativity from fans and media alike.

It's great that we have yet another early kick off, another winnable fixture and, therefore, another opportunity to take maximum points and then relax while our rivals play (and some drop points).

We may not be playing at the top of our game at the minute, but the momentum we could have if we win our next two games could be infectious - it's conceivable that in the next week we will be top of the league and in the CL proper.

For all the negativity, we've won 3 games out of 3. Those are the cold hard facts and is what gives me confidence that we can score 2 goals.
I also want to see Romero tested. The only goal he has let in was a double deflection which I doubt any GK could keep out.
I think the defensive partnership of Blind and Smalling has been incredible in the last 3 games. 1 goal conceded in 270 minutes.
I am fully expecting a win.

I think we'll play a bit better and pick up more than 1 goal this time. I am certainly expecting us to win, anything else would be a significant disappointment. But Newcastle somehow always manage to raise their game against us.

Herrera and BFS Both in please give schniderlin a rest

I don't think he needs a rest, the guy's engine is unreal.

I would bring Bastian in for Carrick though. Then give Schneiderlin a rest if needed midweek

Is this the week that I finally get Schweinsteiger correct in the starting line up? He's surely starting yeah?

No injuries again incredible. This is the most important reason i think we will have a good season.

he doesn't look like he can play more than 45 mins. i have a feeling Carrick will start again.

I put him in against Brugge, and I've put him in again for tomorrow. I think LvG taking Carrick off at half time was a huge indication that he might start, but probably won't finish the game.

Looking forward to this game, I can't see Newcastle sitting back and defending so hopefully we can see an exciting game.
I hope Memphis will continue to play out on the left instead of the middle. With Rooney's good record against Newcastle, hopefully he can get off the mark and gain some much needed confidence going forward.
I look forward to Bastian getting a start alongside Morgan soon, be interesting to see his influence for longer than 45 minutes.

I put in my line up prediction

    Romero
    Darmian - Smalling - Blind - Shaw
    Bastian - Schniederlein
    Mata - Januzaj - Memphis
    Rooney

Herrera, Hernandez & Young off the bench.

Personally I'd start Herrera in this one but don't think Van Gaal will.

I keep predicting BFS to come in, but so far he's still coming on from the bench.

Possibly same team as vs. Brugge if he still isn't quite ready, though I expect once he's up to speed he and Carrick will be rotating game-to-game. Can't see many other changes...

Would like to see a comfortable win with goals, considering the next 3 games we've got are 2 tricky away fixtures at Swansea and Southampton, and the Liverpool at home.

    Ok just making sure

Will probably be the same as the last 2, only with Schweinsteiger coming in for Carrick I think. Memphis will stay on the left so I don't think Young will come in.

Would maybe like to see Hernandez start with Rooney in behind as well, as I think he could bring out the best in Rooney.

3-0 though, Rooney to score 2 goals and Memphis to get 1.

The frustrating thing is that if we went all out attack against Newcastle then they'd be there for a drubbing. Swansea ripped them apart and we could do the same. Unfortunately it will probably be a similar game to Spurs, although I do think that we will win, 1 or 2-0.

We are at home to Newcastle, let's go all out attack!

Same line up as tuesday, wouldn't be surprised if BFS starts ahead of Carrick, although that might break Carrick's confidence a bit..

Hopefully Rooney kick starts his season and Memphis gets his first league goal!

    3-0 : Rooney x1 , Memphis x 1,Mata x1

    Rooney
    Memphis --- Janujaz --- Mata
    Schnei --- Schwi
    Shaw --- Blind --- Smalling --- Darmain
    Romero
Hope this is it too, unless Rojo is back, in which case I'd be tempted to swap him for Blind. Other than that this actually looks like a nice line-up. Woulding mind seeing *cough*Welbeck*cough* Wilson in for Rooney if he doesn't book his ideas up, or even just swapping Jan and Rooney around.
