Smalling is nearly always good. He's had maybe 2 poor games in a couple of years and everyone suddenly wants him sold. His average or poor performances seem to get blown well out of proportion. Where as you have Bailly who is a liability and gets himself into trouble in most games and no one mentions it.

Smalling and Rojo are comfortably our best CB's IMO.

I mean, Smalling has looked better from the start of pre-season and did well in the game against Madrid. If we concede tonight I don't think it'll be from a Smalling fault (and I was a huge critic of his last season).

Smalling is by no means faultless, but could you imagine if he made the same error Jones did? or even Bailly's poor concentration. His name would be turned into a curse word around here. I don't remember him ever making many mistakes like that. Maybe 2 out of his many appearances for us.

    Early team news
It’s understood Ashley Young will start for United tonight but not necessarily at left-back. Mourinho is believed to want to rest Antonio Valencia, so Young could come in at right-back and Matteo Darmian or Daley Blind will line up on the other flank. If Blind comes in, it will be an entirely new back four.

Well that might just beggar all your lineups.

Yep, ah well, there's always next game.

Hope the streaming is working tonight as I still refuse to subscribe to BT Sport as well as sky

Went with this in the end:

    --------------De Gea
    Darmian--Smalling--Lindelof--Young
    ----------Pogba--Matic
    ----Mata--Mkhitaryan--Rashford
    -------------Lukaku

    I'd like to see this:

    -------------De Gea
    Valencia--Smalling--Lindelof--Blind
    ----------Pogba--Matic
    ---Martial--Herrera--Rashford
    --------------Lukaku

Just seen a guy in a 15/16 home top with Schweinsteiger and #23 on the back. Am I missing something or is he just a moron, because his number was #31

Are you Smalling in disguise? Smalling a brilliant defender WoW!!!

Smalling hovers around a 6-7/10 most games. Easily good enough for the Prem but not for a team trying to challenge for the title IMO. A great CB to have in the squad but I would not start him over Bailly, Jones or Rojo

I think that was his number during pre-season that year which he then requested and took 31 off Fellaini after that

I'd love for us to give this side a pasting to mark our return to the competition.

Almost 6 years ago Ashley Young scored a late equaliser to make it 3-3 against this lot. And now he's playing again!
