Us golden oldies huh, you've gotten about 15 years on me!76, first game at O.T in late 1950's my Uncle was an absolutely fanatical United supporter and used to take me to the home games on a Saturday.
I've lost count of how many times it was said over the past few years that a team with Xhaka in it would never compete. Try and look at this very forum for evidence. If we'd bought Partey, it would be used as evidence of how we shop at a lower tier which is why we can't compete. I agree that we need more potency up front unless Sancho and Antony improve drastically which is very possible but my point is, the collective level of a team is never as simple as the accumulated individual level in any one moment. They have the youngest squad in the league, there was more room for internal development than there is in our team. A team with Wout Weghorst up front he's just one example) is never going to compete, more time with the team will lead to improvements but also our squad isn't good enough right now.
Hats off to you sir! You've seen it all the glory and dawn of this club76, first game at O.T in late 1950's my Uncle was an absolutely fanatical United supporter and used to take me to the home games on a Saturday.
The only senipr player at Arsenal who fits your description is Xhaka, the rest of that team yesterday was either brought in under Arteta or were young players who were developed. Presumably you're saying that was a waste of time and this improvement that they're showing was just as possible if they'd stuck with the likes of Leno, Luiz, Bellerin, Guendouzi, Lacazette and Pepe.I've lost count of how many times it was said over the past few years that a team with Xhaka in it would never compete. Well maybe you should go to specsavers because you couldn't see driving home the other night because you don't even wear your glasses on the forum in case you get slagged off
What I am saying is fans treat the value of a player like it's a fixed value. Before the season started, if anyone dared argue that a midfield of Xhaka, Partey and Ødegaard would be the best in the league with a central partnership of Gabriel and Saliba and a couple of City rejects thrown in the mix, you'd be laughed out the building. Yet, we have fans arguing that we need a WC backup for Casemiro to compete. My point is a lot of work is done on the coaching field and the value of a player varies significantly depending on so many factors like coaching, length of time they spend together, complementary teammates, ... etc. Dalot and Shaw are a case in point just like Xhaka and Partey at Arsenal. The only senipr player at Arsenal who fits your description is Xhaka, the rest of that team yesterday was either brought in under Arteta or were young players who were developed. Otherwise I'm not sure what the point is, there has already been a significant improvement in several players from last season (Rashford and Shaw being 2 examples) and obviously with time there will be more continuity and fluidity to our play but a squad that is one midfield absence away from McTominay starting, that has Wout Weghorst starting up front, that has a goalkeeper who can't do what the manager wants and a bench made up largely of kids and players Ten Hag already doesn't think are good enough is not going to challenge at the very top.
