Gunners steal United's crown

1997-98 was a season of disappointment for Manchester United. A flying start to the season could not be maintained in 1998 and as the seemingly invincible Reds faltered, Arsene Wenger's Arsenal side closed the gap at the top and ultimately overtook the defending Champions to steal their crown.

United's Champions' League campaign was also to end in disappointment despite the team showing excellent European form before Christmas. Plagued by injuries in March, the Reds stumbled out of the competition in the quarter-finals, losing to Monaco on away goals.

The Red's FA Cup challenge was to be a similar story, with a shock defeat at Barnsley in the fifth Round.

A poor year for the Reds given the high standards set in previous years, but the rebuilding at the end of this season laid the foundations for the club's most memorable season a year later.
